Political Campaign Door Knocking 101: You Are Always On Camera
As if the act of door knocking wasn’t already daunting enough (that post HERE), here in 2025 we’ve got technology watching our every move.
Of course, I’m talking about doorbell cameras.
That is correct, whenever you are knocking on doors, you have to assume you are always being filmed.
And the cameras are so good that there is audio and lenses that can hear and see you coming from the moment you step out of your car.
This means you must constantly be on your best behavior. No vaping. No phone conversations. No commentary about the house or the voters in the neighborhood. Nothing. Silence.
And when you get to the door, stay friendly and stick to the script.
Unfortunately, you may also encounter homes with doorbell cameras who may not be friendly to your candidate or cause. They may try to get intelligence from you or try to make you angry. Don’t fall for it.
If you believe the conversation is going off the rails, be polite. Thank the voter for their time and move on. Don’t give them that incriminating footage that they’re fishing for.
Doorbell cameras must also be respected even if the voter is not home. You’re likely being watched on their smartphone or will be watched when they see your campaign literature.
This means be courteous when it comes to their lawn and plants, and be gentle when placing the literature on their door.
Me, I like to be friendly and wave at the camera when I’m leaving. Let your body language tell the voter that you want to talk to them.
And don’t forget about the doorbell cameras across the street which may also capture your movement.
This is the reality of door knocking in 2025. It may be a little intimidating at first, but if your’e following the rules, you have nothing to worry about.
