Political Campaign Door Knocking 101: Dealing With Angry Voters

It will happen. On occasion, or a couple of times a day. Angry voters.

You’ll knock on a door, this man or woman will come to the door and realize that you’re trying to get someone elected that they don’t like.

They’ll shout. They’ll scream. They’ll rip up your literature and throw it in your face. They’ll slam the door on you.

Once again. Not if. When.

Please know this. The voter who chooses to treat you this way has a lot more personal issues than just the candidate you’re representing. This is not acceptable behavior for anyone that is old enough to vote. They’re the ones who need to take a self inventory and possibly get help for treating volunteers this way.

Yeah. You’ll read these words. And they might stick with you. But when you get the next angry voter, you might need a moment to remember what I’m telling you.

But the message remains the same. The only door that matters is the next one.

Don’t react. If they give you a reason, write it in your notes. Thank them for their time and walk away. Then forget it happened.

Because rare are the elections that are only determined by one voter. And if this particular person is treating you this way, they likely won’t even make it to the polls. The connected and involved have been in your position before and understand how it feels.

Even after all of this time, I still get angry voters. It doesn’t matter how much I prepare for it. But I keep going for one reason.

And that reason is that the feeling of victory despite their foolish behavior is even sweeter.
