Getting Into Politics: Your First Political Texting Bank
As our lives continue to push towards technology as a means of communication, it was only a matter of time before our texting habits worked their way into our politics. Now, we’ve got campaigns sending out texts to voters, and its become a popular volunteer activity.
Yes. You can knock on doors. Call voters on the phone. And now send out text messages.
Here is what you need to know before your first campaign texting event.
It’s pretty easy: These texting applications work off of a web based program like so many other things do. You’ll feel right at home and it won’t take long to pick this up.
You’ll be doing a lot of mouse clicking: Because of federal laws, you’ll be sending out texts one at a time. This means you’ll get a row of phone numbers on your screen and you’ll click “send” one number at a time. It’s tedious but hardly intense.
You can actually have a conversation with these texts: A lot of the recipients believe no one actually reads the responses to these. Wrong. We read everything (including the profanity and insults) but underneath that noise, you can actually have a conversation and build a connection.
Campaign Management will ask you to forward important messages: With just a click, you can forward any tough questions to the leadership for further action. No worries.
Texting has emerged over the past few years as an effective (and fun) get out the vote measure. I believe everyone should try it, it might be the easiest way to connect with voters.
