Movie Review: “From Dusk Til Dawn” On Tubi Is A Free Horror Classic
When from “Dusk Til Dawn” came out about 30 years ago, audiences weren’t sure what to expect. George Clooney was still climbing the ladder of superstardom. Quentin Tarantino already had two classics with “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction” but audiences were eager for more. And Selma Hayek was still an “it girl” who did (and still does) drive the guys wild.
Now the film is on Tubi for free just before Halloween, and we can all relive the surreal pivot from hostage noir drama to horror vampire classic.
Clooney and Tarantino play Seth and Richie Gecko. Two thieves who take an RV family hostage to cross the border for a criminal rendezvous. While waiting for the meet at a shady bar, we learn that they’ve fallen into trap, where a nest of vampires look to eat them alive.
It might as well be two different movies. But “From Dusk Til Dawn” works in both genres. That’s why we celebrate it decades later. As a hostage drama, director Robert Rodriguez (another hit maker) bounces off of Clooney and family dad (Harvey Keitel) very nicely.
As a horror, it’s more about Clooney and family daughter Kate (played by Juliette Lewis at her peak awkwardness). Along with incredible effects for the era.
A negative on this classic, is that it does get campy at some points. The horror gets cartoonish for a spell and that might bug a couple of less invested viewers.
But From Dusk Til Dawn is still a classic. A Seth Gecko franchise could have been a thing if Clooney didn’t have to be disturbed with Oscars and Ocean’s 13 Movie franchises with other superstars.
If you haven’t watched it, buckle up and be ready for a twist that had audience reeling back then and still does to this day.
